Irritable bowel symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, excess flatus, variable bowel habit, bloating and urgency of defaecation. All of these symptoms can be due to a variety of gastrointestinal diseases and a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome can only be made after other causes are excluded.
The cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unknown, up to 25% occur after an attack of gastroenteritis. Other precipitating factors include food intolerance, stress and anxiety and altered gut sensitivity.
