Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, excess flatus, variable bowel habit, bloating and urgency of defaecation.  All of these symptoms can be due to a variety of gastrointestinal diseases and a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome can only be made after other causes are excluded.

The cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unknown, up to 25% occur after an attack of gastroenteritis.  Other precipitating factors include food intolerance, stress and anxiety and altered gut sensitivity.

RECTAL BLEEDING IS NOT DUE TO IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME AND NEEDS SPECIAL INVESTIGATION BY YOUR DOCTOR.

Treatment of irritable bowel involves excluding other diseases, a careful examination of lifestyle and dietary factors which can aggravate symptoms, a proper diet and if symptoms are severe, medications.
