The GUT Foundation

Treatment of Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease in Adults and Children

Acid reflux, usually causing heartburn, occurs through a relatively incompetent lower oesophageal shincter etc

Heartburn is common in the community affecting 1 in 5 adults with the trend for more women to be affected than men.  Heartburn affects individual ability to eat and drink normally and interferes with their quality of life particularly because of nocturnal symptoms.

The medical treatment of GORD has the objective of

1/ Choosing symptomatic relief
2/ Reducing the risk of complications and improving the quality of life
3/ Healing Oesophageal ulceration.

This is usually based on acid suppression with proton pump inhibitors
